My response to you about my studies was kind of crap. Not in so much as it was incorrect but as in it's not a good display of how i feel right now.
It really began with a series of conversation ( of course with thischickdoesit and mamitamala who else)
about why
I really didn't feel all that arsed to care about PP.
It felt like a dirty evil secret but outside of my basic " I care for all people who need care " . I can't get het up about it and I find most of the admonitions to get ACTIVE about it
annoying , insulting, and kind of futile.
It’s more of the same , where while people are making deep insights about their lives their needs how important this is to them . The public face is really kind of white middle class. Focused on the moral rectitude of Congress than the stunning breadth of of support and necessity it’s in people’s lives. About appealing to one small market instead of looking for where they are needed and making that voice strong. It’s blithely erasing, and not at all seemingly connected to the stuff of passion my twitter tumblr and facebook feeds seem to be popping up.
I’m supporting cause ya know I feel I gotta not cause I want to
And it made me think of the answer about my studies. I was vague I shouldn’t have been.
I am applying at NYU for the Gallatin program. As well I have applied for the Reynolds fellowship In Social Entrepreneurship
My proposed course of study was named New Media and Communication. I suck at naming things
It's a three parter combining Africana Studies , Communication and Digital Marketing as a core. To round it out I wanted to focus on creating documentation and records of Sub altern and subculture discourse.
When I originally started speaking into being I was leaning more towards replacing Communication with performance as a way of possibly diving into pop culture and representation
But my experience and my feelings about where New Media was going made me think more of general communication and identity formation.
I like it when I follow my mind.
Because then Egypt Happened and the Daily and the Huff post.
And the discussion of it but also the technology of it.
All of my online life I haven't battled just simple racism, classism, and the others. I have been going head to head with people complaining in usually uninformed and closed terms about " the market"
We can't handle that now people aren't interested.
We can't moderate that now people might leave ( market share)
The flipside being that in business and marketing for commerce , the response is never oh we can’t but how to we make it so . How do we take a target audience and find out what they do ( market research ) and fit in.
And I liked online because frankly this is where all this is going. People access the web through each other mostly. I honest to god read the news on my smartphone and through tumblr.
Not because as happens way to often in liberal circles I’m not hip or with it enough , but because after enough time and enough real world dealings of people who ignore my realities and abilities and interests., I can tap into people who meet my needs and goals and dreams and interests, without dealing with most of the crap.
Action is spurred and communication is not top down . It’s webbed , its multi platform and it HAS VALUE.
It’s no longer specialized to people with right pedigrees and connections ( and that’s why it’s so scary to people) to move people.
And it’s not enough just to have fans and followers , it’s about making PARTNERS in creation and action.
And being real honest about why that hasn’t happened before
For me it works on large levels . I will happily go into a non profit, big org, and take money to show em how this can work . I will study and discuss and field work for pay
Groups are doing this work and need someone or some help in doing this . and frankly I don't necessarily want to be on stage so , I will happily do the web equivalent of stuffing envelopes.
But also because fundamentally
I believe the people have knowledge, and success stories. Civil rights movements have big names, but the fry cook who ran the shuttles, the homemaker who ran the phone tree, have necessary DEEP knowledge that should be recorded and used. Some of it public some of it secret but we need to start treating people’s lives and stories
as valuable Golden NECESSITIES
and too often in our movements we start worrying ONLY about people who got a book deal or validation from the very entities we claim to be fighting or challenging, as if they worked alone.
Anonymous works like this NOW.
and within american based African diasporic communities, liberalism, & *F*eminism, I really want to know why don’t we?
I want an answer to that really twisted question that we CAN PUT TO WORK
because the tea party is. People are doing million dollar deals on moving that line of thought across mediums.
And shockingly radical, liberal and other causes STARTED this they got these ideas from large movements .
SO why did we drop em? And it’s scary and real and at this point I want tow ork with ANYBODY and EVERYBODY who is serious about it.
And that’s work ugly mean work , but do we have other options?
