So I school visited on the 19th at a high school .

It's strange sad for me to school visit , because education , theatre ,dialogue are things I have done for a living ( Yes I am 25 I am so old) but now have harder times getting access to because I don't have a book deal, or free time , and usually go in asking kids to be defiant little

Now I didn't get to talk on most of it , but as you can see it was about the internet and it's consequences.
Adults were very excited I put the fear of god into kids about facebook. Which worries the hell out of me , because it seems very quietly and stealthy . We have accepted the idea of trying to create ourselves as brands and not as humans. It's been on my mind more and more because there is a distinct lack in some areas of any critique of it .
And that's why I included the consequences bit . Because being online , being in any way connected to human beings has consequences and responsibilities .
To our reactions,interactions have consequences because they are connected to our real life human selves.
You are not for sale. You are not a brand , a logo, a catch phrase or a collection of " stuff" especially stuff in text boxes.
Facebook's privacy issues are important. Not because of the power of your " info" ( though information is powerful) but because someone who has no idea of anything but a super privileged life, is using your information to make billions, while doing his level best to create a culture where in if you don't participate you are subject to unfair moral , social and possibly financial ramifications.
All of which are only supported by the ignorance of privilege and nonchalance of hypocrisy.
In making a world where everyone is or isn't . You sneakily try to create permanent reasons for creating an underclass. People who don't do what " you want" are emphatically WRONG . There is no complexity , no learning curve, no reason for this ostracize , just " a bad brand"
And god forbid we mess with the " brand".
This is othering for the internet age , protect the brand and destroy anything that can't get the internet access or won't use it to fight back .

Author aside , lets be honest here. If Sarah Palin was Sam Parsons ...
this person would be a disaster for the rights of women everywhere in America. And that's before we even get to the reproductive rights bit.
The things she DOES makes a disaster , she could call herself a purple apalossa stallion for all I care.
So why do we care? Why aren't we imagining a way around her and those like her ? Why is this an asbomination and how do we DO and imagine a world differently for ourselves? What is the world we are fighting for to be so excited about her labeling.
AND BE SPECIFIC?!?
But what is happening instead are round and rounds about why the word needs to be protected.Mind you most of the people up in arms about the thing will proceed to blanche and hem and haw about be attached to anything that this " word" their protecting does.
Then it turns in to why we can't change " certain people" and why their special shiny brand needs to be protected.
Brand Management stops action cold. Brand Management ( including your personal brand like anti-racist , feminist, progressive " race man")

What we DO becomes subsumed to What we ARE or see ourselves to be ( or call ourselves). And if what we have to do challenges our comfort in that.
Newsflash : We may have to do a WHOLE BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS.
We may have to try some and fail . And not just kind of fail but go up in bright shiny firey deathballs of " WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS A GOOD IDEA?!?!?"
That doesn't mean we turn every single question of our intent or actions into "haters" but it DOES mean that when we do something we have to be present for it , in the moment and
WILLING TO ANSWER TO AND FOR IT.
And yes having discussions in ANY form ( including the web fam) is doing something . As long as we are talking about truly changing SOMETHING, the way we do things , see things act , of truly moving ourselves FORWARD.

Sarah Palin's feminism/ your right to privacy/whether a boycott will work or is " right" becomes the farthest you have to go to engage an idea.
We NEED to know where Palin is , because if we had to engage her ideas ? If we had to look at why she was so popular , at what tactics she used at why they are successful.
We might not like what we see in the mirror. We might have to shut up and listen, we might have to admit that there is more stuff there than just " Caribou Barbie"?
IF we sat down and boycotted and yelled and truly sat with figuring out why this BP thing is a fuck up of insane proportions we'd have to ask
Where else are they?
Why is it so hard for some people to act ? Why can't they just not go to Walmart ? Is it really that tight
Why aren't they in danger of being shut down
and how in the hell did this happen?
And if we looked at facebook and the internet ?
We might have to ask why everyone wants so much to have a brand and is advising us to protect it instead of leading lives and being human.
and acting humanely , that is a power a brand does not have , a corp does not have .
We would have to look at what we are selling and ALLOWING to be sold, who we allow to sell it and to what end
We can fight over words and swear that once we have them it means we can talk and talk forever
or we can listen

I want them to be radical in the idea that every single moment , word , and action is bound not by a desire to brand or market, to fulfill someone elses vision but to ENVISION a world that comes with the full power of your humanity. And the sheer light we can make when it is engaged together ,
It'll be yours no matter what facebook does, what Palin calls herself , and doesn't need a marketing scheme.
Won't have a cool logo but some how we'll manage.
