I would have you note that Brown is younger than my mother.

The decision that her child , the person, you are reading , could even be considered for the opportunity of a decent education is now pretty much null.

And don't for one second tell me about taxes , as study after study shows how taxes are ACTUALLY distributed.

This court has said that they believe the way to honor was to prevent the rectification of it.

One of the school districts was STILL under mandatory laws FROM the time of Brown their desegregation was so shoddy.

As in less than 7 years ago they were doing everything they could to keep the coloreds in their place

Away from anything that white people wanted. This tells a school it can make no decision to keep balance or actual fairness if it means one soccer mom cant get her way.

This is colorblind society.

This is what it means when everyone is given the same choices in an unequal system. This is what happens when everyone prefers to think they did nothing to contribute and shouldn't have to suffer for the past.

And by suffer we mean consider anyone else.

Combine that with a system only giving money to some schools and tell me you think this system works.

So I am finally a little calmed down.

And rested.

Allied Media Conference was rejuvenating and frustrating.

And i found out I don't know anything at all .

And It made me so much happier than I have been in YEARS.

For me it was a true examining of the personal is political . And also a true SEPARATION of the two for me at least. But it also went beyond that

The workshops :

Popular education makes me want to dance it just does. The first half of the conference was an educational symposium . And educator BA loves educating the young ins . ( the fact that to me youngins means kids who for real are often less than four years my junior means nothing) Lead by Scott Kurashige it was an amazing break down of globalism and stress points that really asked us t o think of how we relate to people and ALL students.

Stresspoints is the idea of because oppression works on SO MANY LEVELS it can also be stressed and broken at many points .

So rather than try and create homogenous transnational movements, international solidarity between various self concerned peoples DOING WHAT MATTERS TO THEM can be just as effective.

IE : I don't have to be you or have it worse than you for us to work together. I jsut have to want what I want you want what you want and once we make sure it's not at each others expense we can be in solidarity with out having to follow each others agendas.

No to mention the way we win will affect the way we run things .

AMEN HALLELUJAH CHURCH PREACHER TABERNACLE ALTAR and whatever else we need to affirm that.

Analysis:

SO to be honest I ended the session of Bridging the Gap weeping. On the floor sobbing .

It was the media.

The video of a young woman who looked JUST like a student i had taught talking about wondering what they will take from you next. Following video of a man getting shot and then the riot gear police.

BLackAmazon has a flashback. It starts small and then gets bigger and then wohoo Sudy's eyes getting huge as I hold her hand to my chest and my heart is RACING.

And I am sobbing I mean sobbing and laughing and generally melting down.

I did it first when it happened to me.

I am person terrorized by the state. And i had to face it in many ways alone.

I started this blog because of that.

It was a personal reaction to a very political act.

And i was ALONE on a floor.

And I found people.

But I went to See Children of Men and it happened again on a subway station in NYC and I was

ALONE.

The reason I say this breakdown was important for me is that as a WOC MEDIA MAKER AND THEORIST ( claim it ladies)

We have grown accustomed to being alone and discounted and thinking of our spoken experiences as us addressing personal needs to be heard.

Were not huge blogs, or printing houses or anything else. It's just typing often through tears anger fury at keyboards

Telling our truth. And it starts personal.

But the thing that makes it powerful and honest and NECESSARY that hit me like a lead weight in that video

is that for me and MANY LIKE ME it is political. Reducing us to our fears, destroying our family lives are political acts meant to improve very often the pockets or standing of someone else.

On that floor I said aloud what so many of us say :

What did I do wrong but be born?

As bloggers we are using populist media , yes we have privilege but we ar e telling our turth in chunks and snippets across tubes in ways that tey aren't even told by those who claim to be for us.

Insurgents are becoming mothers

Illegals sons daughters

Single Moms activists poets

Workers theorists

Deportees fathers

We are in ways that previously were only accessible AFTER you met the right sort.

We started because we were naive enough to think we didn't need to be JUSTIFIED to be heard, and while it meets some resistance . IT aslo is met with love.

While i was having a flashback somoene very lovingly and it is appreciated wondered why they had not stopped to let me cry.

And the mere though of that made me upset.

Because while my personal shit is mine and important (and as a Leo i am self centered often to the extreme)

This media making this thing that will pull me up and knock me back to the floor time and time again , is no longer about me alone.

It has to be about these poor women who have no luxury of having a safe breakdown in safe houses.

It has to be about young women scared to walk 8 meters home.

It has to be about a 22 year old girl sobbing and overeating and scared of cops and stil fiery and fierce .

It has to be about these people without justification, or shame in their wanting to be specific and safe and held together.

We have a right to be special and ragged and hurt and demand safety from fear.

We have a right to do so and demand that any who would challenge it be specific respectful and forthright.

And we have a responsibility to keep the fact that working for those rights from stopping the work of others.

I cried my heart out and media saved my life and while I am crying I hope to god no one ever stops for me at the expense of ANYONE else.

Knowing what it is, I also know how important the message is never interrupted.

Because I was taken care of I Was loved I was embraced my hands were held my face was cooled ( and Sudy even calmly took a choke hold)

For the first time , I may have been on the floor but I was not alone.

That is what this Media can do.

That is what it must.

I am willing to make that happen.

Back up in dat blog with the resurrection

So i am in Sudy's room having a quick post before we indulge in come more crazy.

This has been an amazing experience. It was so NECESSARy for me to physically be in the presence of women wo knew what I had experienced and were willing to be direct with me.

It was also an amusing thing to see people for the first time, and interact with them as if I had knwn them ffor years and expecting them to know me .


I do sing everywhere I do have HUGE boobs and yes te hair is wild and I am tall and loud.

Sudy is teh most fierce thing you will ever see, Fab is the most amazing listener, BFP is the amazing theorist, UBUNTU are two of the most thought ful dynamic women ever

I was introduced to the concept of popular education and it is something that I feel WOC have described without being named .

Ins o much as that movements NEED difference and not superficial difference but the difference taht comes form our varied experiences being thoughtfully and honestly engaged.

This is not utopia, there a re more than a few things that pissed me off and by that I mean truly made me question the ability of people to truly supercede things.

It has also made me very aware of how I begin to fit into a long history that is not waves , but

as Lex so powrfully mentioned

The calling of spirits from trees so we gonna knock on wood.

If nothing else it has made me realize and god I sound SAPPY but that what we do here can be and when done honestly and openly


is revolutionary. And is in so many ways foreign even to the " radicals".


It is not an addenum , itis a part of us calling forth our energies, our wills and our strengths in what we have to to do what we can and speak openly.

We are doing the work.

But we can no longer continue to do the work in the way we have been.

There must if we are to be good allies and workers we must work on making EVERYONE young old all colors

PEOPLE

full bodied people who think of and with in love.

Love that is niether easy nor free

Love that exchanges and empowers

Love that is fiery and cool in turn because it lets PEOPLE be people

not images or slogans or hits ar ways of gaining power

But the focus of our work

How we move and direct ourselves as people to help people fully acess who and what they NEED to have to survive

No less.

When I started this post I was thinking about the awesome post BFP made about her life and the smell of Bananas .

And the first thing I flashed back to was packing up my college apartment in summer 2005 . my clothes gone my room ironed and trying DESPERATELY to fit the food we were about to chuck into my suitcase and having a panic attack.

Because I was officially going from privilege college student to poor overweight black girl scared to know where her next meal was coming from.

If I brought home rice a roni and ramen I wouldn't have failed at life. Mind you that May my father had been deported and only that previous year I had done any real work with my ADHD, and I was scared and terrified of the world.

I was DESPERATE to not be ANOTHER fat woman hungry, lazy.

That my eating my noted up insides, that my poor self care, and working myself to death were connected very much to not be something I had never EVER been.

When I started losing weight ( or finishing puberty whatever) and my tits grew in ( more) and my ass dropped , suddenly I wasn't Mammy I was Sapphire.

I wasn't legal to drink but I was a walking symbol. I was fighting symbols just by trying to exist.

One of the interesting things I find is that often in feminist/progressive dialogue we will have extended discussion about the " ridiculous standards" placed on women. That the rules for being a good girl are often too much one thing and not enough of the other.

While as women of color we are sidelined in terms of being women at ALL.

The desire to deconstruct or supercede these facets of womanhood, comes with an implicit acknowledgement that this "womanhood" includes you at all. That should you so not choose to fulfill them you can retain your womanhood status.

As a black woman it is very interesting to observe the ease with which our womanhood is discounted.

Marisa's excellent article on Michelle Obama's media coverage, is a brillant example. In Both the O'Dowd and Dickerson piece Michelle Obama's womanhood is called into question because she is not some shrinking violet. It is portrayed as a hen pecked weakening of Barack Obama's mystique .

What jumped out at me as I read them was that in most articles about Michelle OBama...

She is never described physically ( racialicious has an excellent round up ) but you almost NEVER ever see a physical description of Michelle Obama in these assaults on her woman hood. ( Yeah I said it )

Michelle Obama is very much the supposed " ideal" in terms of physicality for women. Her physical being can be used in attempts to portray her as a haridan because well trying to cast a slim conservatively dressed permed woman as some kind of Camelot dream slaying harpie makes you look kind of stupid.

Also VERY interesting. Her physical interaction with HER HUSBAND never comes up. A couple that repeatedly makes eye contact before speaking , is often seen "off stage" in physical proximity to each other and smiles a lot , not at all interesting.

So is it a stretch for me to notice that unless it can be used against her a WOC physicality or sexuality never comes up?

And by used against her I mean unless she will visually fullfill the stereotypes) or Black women as a sexual,or hyper sexual( which usually means perceived as such) , or elder states woman, you'll be lucky to find out what she looks like.

We lack bodies if they can not be co opted.

Now first and foremost this woman is the epitome of SEE I AM DIFFERENT SYNDROME. Her writing screams of the please pay attention I am not like the REST of them .

Salon has quickly and steadily lost all credibility with me ( *waves at Broadsheet*) concerning " special interest groups" ( VOMIT) but it does not surprise me in the least that their one consistent black contributor routinely and without fail contributes " thought provoking" and "challenging" articles , almost all of whom serve to rap African Americans on their knuckles and introduce them into the ways of polite society.

Mostly with little fact , less support and convinced of her self importance and self contradiction like a mofo.

Her latest is a compendium of WTF , is you serious, and the general throttling of responsible journalism. Her use of quotes to cast sarcasm and derision by selective quoting is typical but what disturbs honestly, for someone choosing to chastize an entire race of women.

The lazy. The absolute mind blowing lazy that she passes off as depth and concern. First and foremost she patently takes the statements of the Village Voice article as gospel. Buffy drinks nothing but sigary sweets or does she live on salt pork? Which one is it?

She of course knows exactly the best way to have the body preferred by the urbal lad mags which she cavlierly and openly states is obesity.

Now all other things aside ( like BMI crock of Shit) she forgets that bodies are shaped different and it is entirely possible to put on weight MOSTLY in your lower body, which is the body type these men claim to prefer. But of course when damning the ignant NEgroes for the white folk please go for the most simplistic and ridiculous explanation.

In her admonition of Buffy she forgets something very very important at 157 pounds 5'7 Buffie solidly in the " accepted range" of BMI. SO the standard bear she seeks to mock for being a herald for Obesity

ISN'T EVEN OVER WEIGHT

But let not that stop a cavalcade of unsubstantiated claims and damning mockings from a woman who thinks nothing of chiding other people for their food choices.

Especially let it not at all hit her in her head that the same discrimination she felt when people asked her whats wrong with her from her bodybuilding days might apply here SHHH. LETS not expect sense.

Or that she would easily and readily take the word of a white man over you know CALLING BUFFY herself about her body.

OR that a " liberal magazine would rush to publish it" or ignore the lack of evidence or that ye olde " OBESITY EVERYAOFDHSAFDJHIEWI" chicken littels would link to it noddingly

or that Buffy has a healthy 28 inch waist.

HER ASS IS ACTUALLY JUST THAT BIG.

What interests me is her claim that somehow black women exist in this magical world where we are not chastized or criticized for our bodies.

In an article trying to call a very normal young woman OBESE.

In the world of Norbit, in the world of black face MAMIES at proms, she contends that we are not all affected by it

or that in America Black people might have a long historical reason for looking at every doctor who don't look like them sideways?

So that black woman who do not give into societal pressures are BOTH Jezebel and MAMMY .

However if you click the Tressie MC quote black women who DO contend in that rarefied air of being " acceptable"
